Upon walking out of Independence Hall after the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Benjamin Franklin was asked a provocative question. Someone shouted out, “Doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?”
His quote was meant to serve as a warning. Our republic is fragile and volatile. It requires great care and protection if we want to maintain it.
